It is not recommended to attempt to detox on your own due to the potential for severe withdrawal symptoms and the risk of relapse. Going “cold turkey” with alcohol or benzodiazepines, without medical supervision, can be dangerous and even life-threatening in some cases.
Stopping suddenly can cause withdrawal symptoms such as tremors, seizures, agitation, confusion, hallucinations, and even delirium tremens (DTs), which can be life-threatening.
Withdrawal can cause an increased heart rate and blood pressure, which can put a strain on the heart and lead to problems such as heart attack or stroke.
Psychological distress: Cold turkey withdrawal can lead to anxiety, depression, and other psychological problems.
It is best to seek the support of a medically assisted detox program, such as the one offered at TRC, to ensure the safest and most comfortable experience possible
-
During detox, an individual can expect to be monitored closely by a team of medical professionals, and may be given medications to manage withdrawal symptoms and address any underlying medical conditions. They can also expect to receive emotional support and counseling to help them cope with the physical and psychological challenges of detox.
